India’s No.1 DTH player, Dish TV, announced Movie On Demand (MOD) service. Under this service, Dish TV will broadcast new Hindi and English movies within 30 days of release. First movie that will be aired under this scheme is ‘Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye’ (UTV Motion Pictures). This is the first Indian film to be telecasted on DTH platforms within one month of its release. You can watch this movie on both Dish TV and Tata Sky on December, 18 which was released in theatres on November, 27.
Subscription charges: Rs 100 per every new movie.
Subscriber can watch each new movie throughout the day. Dish TV will soon broadcast super hit movies like Taare Zameen Par, Jab We Met and Spider Man 3 in the PPV space. Big TV is providing 40 Hindi and regional movie channels under Video on Demand service which is refreshed every 15 days. Subscription fee is just Rs 50 per month.
Dish TV now has 48 lakh subscribers in India and is now commanding 46% of market share despite entry of Reliance, Tata, Sun and Airtel entry into DTH space. Company now aims to achieve a target of 1 crore subscribers by 2010. Dish TV is now broadcasting 225 channels of which 21 are audio channels.
This move by DTH players is a further setback to the multiplex owners especially in Metro cities where people are severely affected by economic slowdown. At present, new movies are broadcasted on DTH after 2 months of release. According to media analysts, total PPV revenues in India are expected to touch $18.5 billion by 2017. PPV subscribers will touch 137 million by 2012 and 163.8 million by 2017.
DTH players already grabbed 10% of cable market and are growing fast despite service problems due to poor knowledge of technicians.
