Why Paid Web Hosting is Better Than Free Web Hosting

The only upside that comes with free web hosting is of course that it is offered free of cost and the domain name too never costs you a dime. Well, that's about the only upside to free web hosting. This option is great for users who just want to get a feel of the web hosting industry or are interested in just establishing a simple presence on the web. Free web hosting however comes equipped with loads of advertisements in the form of banner ads, pop-ups, floating pop-ups and so on. Furthermore, the user's URL would have the web host's name on it (username.freeservers.com). This could reflect a lack of professionalism for your online website and thereby is not recommended for users who are trying to establish a long-term online presence. Furthermore, free web hosting companies do not offer enough bandwidth as compared to paid web hosting services.

With free web hosting, the user wields less or no control over their account and the company can change their terms and conditions at any time. What's more? The company may even remove your account from their servers if you do not sign up for their paid services. A free hosting account comes with limited features that could stifle and restrict future growth of your website. Now, these limitations can seemingly be detrimental for your website. So if you are thinking of having more than just an online web presence, paid web hosting is a much brighter option to be considered. However, if the user is just planning to use the website as a personal website for friends and family, then free web hosting is a wiser option.

For online business and creating a niche on the World Wide Web, paid hosting is an ideal option. There are a wide variety of web hosting companies that offer highly affordable hosting accounts. These packages are usually equipped with all the essential tools, features and services required to host your website. The control panel available with these accounts allows the user to control and manage various aspects of their hosting account. With paid hosting, the user hosts his/her own domain. So if in the event the user decides to change his web host provider, he can easily transfer his domain to his new provider without losing out on traffic.

Furthermore, paid hosting services come outfitted with various features and utilizable tools as well as 24/7 customer support through toll-free phone, email or even live chat. The user gains access to ample disk space and bandwidth, which is usually missing with free web hosting. However, it is only wise to choose a paid package that perfectly befits your website needs. Do not get lured into "unlimited bandwidth and disk space" schemes. This is because if your website requires a specific amount of bandwidth and disk space, it is futile paying for features and bnadwidth/diskspace that would not be utilized. Therefore, ascertain and analyze your website needs and then select a paid package that is customized to your needs and budget.

Basic Web Hosting Needs and Linux Hosting Server Advantages

While browsing through the internet it does not matter which kind of server is used for hosting your site. Different web servers are utilized for various purpose of many website. The opinions of the various customers differ and thus they choose web servers according to their needs to promote their site ahead of the others in their required market area.

If your website has complex features or you have an e-commerce site that has typical database functionality with enormous dynamic pages of your services or products, then the type of your web server will depend on your requirements.

Small business firms who have tiny budget to promote themselves generally require these following things to host their site. These basic things of a host can be very crucial for those who are going to introduce their new business into their required business market arena.

1. Web Space: Web space should be given the first importance from your end. This is the place where your all files like html pages, images, video files will be stored. Nowadays web host packages propose enough disk space to host your site at your budget.

2. Databases hosting: Hosting the database of your website is really very crucial for your budget. If you don't have any special fascination about MS-SQL then you should choose My-SQL database, because it will work more or less same as MS-SQL databases but the expenditure to hosting the database or server will be exceptionally less.

3. POP3 e-Mail Access: For a professional appearance of your business you need an e-mail account from the same domain name of yours. Nowadays most of the webs hosts are give you a POP3 email account setup for your business use along with their packages. When choosing your hosting plan just you need to overview it.

4. Security: Secured hosting plans should require for any kind of web business. All small business owners are seeking more or less web security for growing their business into their business market area through internet. Thus this issue should be checked before choosing any web hosting firm.

5. 24/7 support service: It is quite natural to face problems while hosting your site or it may be possible that your web server unfortunately may go down any moment. Thus you need to hire those web hosting firms who will guarantee the 24/7 customer support service to their clients.

6. Price: People are searching for cheap web hosting packages to host their website and this is necessary from their own view point. Thus for all small business owners Linux web hosting packages are competitively cheaper than others.

Linux web hosting is cheaper. The reason must be searched in licensing costs that are lower from Windows hosting plans and in the ability of Linux hosting servers to support higher web sites as per server ratio without compromising the quality of service.

Advantages of Linux server hosting

1. Linux web hosting packages are competitively cheaper than others hosting packages.

2. Linux web servers can hold vast web sites without negotiating the quality of service.

3. As Linux is known as open source software product it can afford less licensing cost which in turn reduces the hosting fees.

4. Linux website can easily bee converted to any Windows based site with no disturbance.

5. While using the Linux hosting you can easily access all cheaper web database systems like My-SQL database which can reduce the expenditure.

6. Inexpensive scripting language like My-SQL, PHP, Perl etc. are also accessible for your website while hosting your site from Linux server.

7. It is generally known that Linux web hosting servers are much secured than any other hosting servers. The security issue is satisfactorily organized in Linux hosting.

How Much Does it Cost to Have a Website?

When people learn that I earn a living online, one of the first things they ask me is how much does it cost to have a website? I assume its because they like the idea of making extra money online and want to find out how much it would cost for them to do it too. In this article I'm going to explain the basic costs of starting your very own website.

How much you spend is largely up to you. You could easily drop thousands of dollars on bells and whistles that you don't really need. But all you really need to get started is a domain name and a reliable web host.

A domain name is simply the name you want to give your website. For example, Google's domain is google.com. To get a domain name of your own you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar. This gives you the right to use that name for your website. Prices vary from one registrar to another but you can get your own domain for as little as $8 a year.

Of course having a domain name doesn't mean you have a website yet. You have to find someone to host your site for you. Think of your web host as your landlord, but instead of renting an apartment you're renting space on their server. Their server is connected to the internet and that's how your website is available to the whole world. As far as actually building your site and adding content, there are plenty of free site builders to choose from and most hosts let you choose whichever one you want.

Prices for web hosting vary wildly from one host to the next. They all offer different features and some are better than others, but there are many hosts that only charge around $5 to $9 per month. Of course you'll want to shop around a bit to find one that suits your needs.

Free Telephony In India - An Idea

"Why do we need to pay for making phone calls?" This was the question that came to my mind while I was glancing at my phone bill. Why the phone calls can't be completely free, I thought. Well, it is indeed possible, at least in India!

Telephone tariff has significantly come down. Rs. 1 per minute call charge is routine. The question is how to make it completely free - no call charges; no rentals.

The key to free telephony is advertisement revenue. This is one area which most of the telecom service providers have ignored till now. The blind focus on increasing ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) has hardly bore fruits. A paradigm shift and rechristening of ARPU as Advertising Revenue Per User may open a goldmine.

It will work on these lines. The more a telecom consumer talks, the more advertising she hears (fixed number of seconds per minute of talk time), and the more money an advertiser pays to the telecom service provider.

Here are some of the options to generate advertising revenue sufficient enough to make telephony free.

  • Caller tunes to turn into 10 second advertisement. When someone makes a call, instead to hearing some song, he gets to hear an AD till the time the recipient receives the call.

  • When the call gets started, first 10 seconds of every minute are advertising time. Balance 50 seconds are talk time. Advertising and talk time cycle continues till the time call ends.

  • Every SMS that is sent has a footer advertisement of 25 characters.

  • At the end of every call, the caller and the receiver receive an advertising SMS.

  • Balance inquiry SMS has a footer having a 25 character advertisement.

Will consumers mind being exposed to so much advertisement?

Every sane individual knows that there is no such thing as free lunch. When a consumer is not being charged a penny to talk endlessly, she has to give something back. In this case, this something is 10 seconds to hear annoying advertisements for every 50 seconds of her talk time. Any rational human being like me would accept this fact of life even if she gets annoyed by the frequent intrusion of advertisement. We all are habituated of hearing rubbish all the time - at home, office, street, TV and where not. Does it make a big difference if we are forced to hear 1 minute of advertisement for 5 minute of free talk on phone? In India, only a fool will let pass this opportunity for free unlimited telephony! In any case, those who don't want to listen to the advertisement can always opt for the paid telephony option.

Will telecom provider find enough advertisers for profitable operation?

Of course yes. There are two compelling reasons for advertisers to opt for this new advertising medium. First, there can't be more apt medium for highly targeted advertisement. Telecom providers maintain excellent database of their customers which includes personal details. In any case, when offering free telephony, telecom service providers can always ask for more personal information from their customers to help the companies find right target audience for advertisement exposure. Second, it's a medium where the consumer can't shift channels to ignore advertisement. They are forced to hear it all, actively or passively, as they are still on line with the other person. These two reasons will not only fetch advertisement revenue for telecom service providers but will also help them in asking for a premium over other advertising mediums.

What it means for advertising industry?

It's a sweet-n-sour deal for them. On one hand it will open a new source of revenue; on the other hand it will demand high level of creativity and out-of-the-box thinking to survive in this medium. In this new medium, only 10-second ads are possible to ensure that the operation runs with least glitches. So telling all stories for all brands in 10 seconds flat would be the norm making the whole process extremely demanding.

A caveat for telecom service providers

This free telephony would result in quantum jump in talk time volume leading to acute network congestion. So strengthening of telecom infrastructure to cope multiplication of call volume is a necessity. Without extraordinary infrastructure, the concept of free telephony cannot take-off.

Isn't the idea of free telephony in India an idea that can change the world of millions? I feel it is. Will someone say, "What an idea sir jee?"

Make and receive calls over internet free using TringMe !

a few days back TRAI announced that it will soon allow internet calls to be terminated on fixed and mobile networks and vice-versa, and we are immediately seeing companies taking advantage of it.

Although not on a fixed line, the calls can be made and received through internet enabled phones using Tringme .Tringme also has an embeddable flash widget that allows users to entirely get rid of their phone and call though a landline or even GTalk.

Users only need a microphone connected to their computer. Calls are entirely free, and users can choose to keep their phone number private. Users can also choose to only receive voicemails, which can go to ones' email as text or played back as audio in GTalk. TringMe also lets users build their own Mobile VoIP client.

TringMe APIs create rich web based voice applications that enables developers like Adobe and Symbian S60 to create stand alone voice enabled applications easily. Social networking sites can also integrate voice in their apps. Their SMS based VoIP solutions enables one to just send an SMS to TringMe, who will in turn connect to any phone number/GTalk, SIP URI worldwide. They notify the call receiver about the identity of the caller unlike many other value added services.

The news is that, the solution is available only in India (update: Tringmeservices are available all over the world and not restricted to India. They have close to 4 million direct+enterprise users using the service worldwide. Tringme services offers much more than Jajah and jaxtr which only offers click2call services) and the firm has kicked off well to compete against Jajah and Jaxtr who provide similar services globally.

The location being Bangalore, the startup looks extremely promising and in the recent Adobe RIA summit the company went differentiating themselves by adding a source code to their business card which is the working code to make the call using TringMe APIs. They did attract a lot of audience to their stand in the summit.

Tringme is one startup which should be watched closely in near future. They have all the ingredients to be a big success.

SMS 2.0 + Search = Killer App !

If there is any doubt that SMS is the single most popular feature on a mobile phone then this post is not for you. If there isn't any doubt then yes, SMS is the single most popular feature on the mobile phone. After mobile phone, SMS is the best thing to happen to India. It is called as texting in some countries.

Either way SMS is a big market with unlimited potential. SMS is used for traffic alerts and other stuff by the government agencies. There are enough contests, which need you to send SMS to them. They charge anywhere between 3 rupees to 6 rupees. Based on that you can guess how big the market is.

Indians are avid searchers on the Internet. They lag other Asian nations and are ranked last by a recent survey. But, an Indian triggers 51 searches per month. A total of 1.2 billion searches were conducted last month. Wow. This is only expected to grow. There are close to 260 million mobile connections in India.

Now combine the search market with SMS market and what do you got. Killer application. This could actually revolutionize the way things work in the search and Internet market. It is predicted that mobile and not PC will have a greater penetration and more people access Internet via mobile.

Airtel introduced a search via SMS which would bypass the traditional connect to the Internet (GPRS) route. I am assuming they would charge 1 rupee or less per SMS and the number of searches conducted via SMS would be a fraction of the searches conducted via Internet. Even then, it would rake in a lot of moolah. I am sure Reliance and other service providers would follow but Airtel with its subscriber base and first mover advantage has a leg up. I guess the search is powered by Google.

This could potential solve multiple problems. I don't have to connect my GPRS and download stuff and be charged by the kb downloaded. I don't have to remember all the sms numbers to get different news and other stuff. This is like a one point entry for all your search needs. It would be interesting to see how they would send the search results because of the limitation on the number of characters in an SMS. I am guessing they would send more than one SMS to provide what your want.

Users need to download an application called SMS2.0 (no surprise here considering the hype around web2.0) by sending "SMS2" to 543210. There will no charge for the download and the regular SMS rates as per your plan apply.

I have not tried this yet, but I am raring to go. Have any readers tried it yet?

DDA Housing Scheme gets good response

The DDA Housing Scheme 2008 has attracted about 3.5 Lac applicants for the 5010 flats put for sale. DDA had a dream run in terms of money collected on Application forms and will earn a interest of about 45 crores in the 3 month period on the Registration amount collected from the applicants. The lottery draw will be held in the Month of December.

Result of Allotment

The results of the draw shall be displayed on the Notice Board of DDA at Vikas Sadan, D-Block, INA, New Delhi-23. In addition the result shall be displayed on the website of DDA with the address http://www.dda.org.in. The result will also be published in the leading national Newspapers.

Allotment Cum Demand Letters will be dispatched through Speed Post/Courier/Registered Post

Waiting List

A separate waiting list of 200 applicants will also be declared in order of priority. The waiting list will be valid only for 9 months from the date of issue of demand letters. The registration money of the wait listed registrants shall be refunded along with unsuccessful registrants. However, before going for the draw in case the same takes place for filling up the vacancies, all such eligible wait-listed shall be asked to deposit the registration money. 15 days time shall be given to them to do so and only those names shall be included who would be depositing their registration money prior to the draw. A draw will be held only once after six months, from date of issue of demand letters, for allotment of the surrendered flats to the wait listed registrants as per the priority decided initially. Only those flats which are surrendered within six months from date of issue of demand letters would be included for allotment to waitlisted registrants. The waiting list is created just to ensure that the surrendered flats (if any) are allotted to same registrants rather than keeping them vacant and the list will be valid only for 9 months, hence it doesn't create any right of the wait listed registrants if they fail to get a flat from the surrendered ones. If successful, the cost would be the cost of the flat on the date the demand cum-allotment letter is issued.

Interest on Registration money

In case registration money is not refunded within three months from the closure of the scheme, in case of unsuccessful applicants, simple interest @ 5% will be paid on the registration money for the period beyond three months after the closure of the scheme up to the last date of the preceding month in which refund has been made.

Can I surrender my Flats on allotment ?

The successful applicants shall have the options to surrender the flats before the issue of the possession letter. Flat will be automatically cancelled in case payments are not made within the prescribed period. No show cause notice shall be issued for the purpose. In both the cases, amount deposited is refundable without any interest. However, cancellation charges shall be recovered

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd’s project for setting up mobile network for 93 million subscribers across the country, the world’s largest, has received bids from 6 vendors - Ericsson, Nokia Siemens, Alcatel Lucent, ZTE, Huawei and Nortel.

US major Motorola did not submit its bid despite having gone to the court for being disqualified from bidding for the previous contract in 2006.

The move from Motorola could be indicative of the company’s future strategy of not going after the GSM equipment market and instead focus on new technologies such as WiMax.

BSNL will award the contract to the lowest bidder in each zone in the country. The financial bids will be opened after a committee evaluates the technical aspects submitted by the vendors.

The total cost of the project is estimated at around $10 billion.

Four parts

BSNL had divided the project into four parts. Part 1 includes setting up network for GSM based 2G mobile services.

For this, South zone received bids from Huawei, ZTE and Nortel. Ericsson, Nokia Siemens (NSN) and ZTE bid for the North zone. Alcatel Lucent and NSN bid for West and for the East zone, the battle is on between Ericsson and Huawei.

The second part involves rolling out third generation (3G) network. For this Huawei, ZTE and NSN are vying with each other in the South zone. Ericsson is battling with ZTE in the North. Huawei, ZTE and Ericsson have put in their bids for the East and for the West, it’s a four-way fight between ZTE, Huawei, Alcatel Lucent and NSN.

ZTE in all zones

While Ericsson and NSN have bid for areas where they already have set up infrastructure either for BSNL or other operators, Chinese vendor ZTE is the only company which has put in its bid for all zones in both categories.

The third segment will be awarded to companies which can set up the passive infrastructure including towers, power generation rooms and other basic equipment required for a cell site.

BSNL has received bids from a number of players including GTL Infra, KEC, Quippo and Acme.

Bidding for software

The fourth part is related to software and billing for which the bidding will take place by the end of the month.

Almost all BSNL’s mobile contracts have run into rough weather previously. Some of the vendors said that the latest contract may also get controversial once the financial bids are opened.

They said that BSNL had diluted the eligibility norms allowing vendors with no manufacturing facility in India to bid for the project.

In the earlier contract, BSNL had made it mandatory for the vendors to have local manufacturing, which had kept out the Chinese companies from the bidding process.

BSNL to procure 93-m GSM lines

Looking to expand its network in rural India and the onset of the 3G services round the corner, state-owned BSNL today opened the large tender for 93 million GSM lines for which as many as six companies have made a bid.

Through these 93 million lines, BSNL also plans to extend coverage of its GSM mobile services to all villages having population of more than 1,000 persons. Besides, 25 per cent of these lines are for operating the 3G equipment.

The tender is worth $9 billion and was floated two months back.

Six telecom vendors, including Nokia-Siemens Network, have bid for the 93-million GSM lines contract. These include Nokia-Siemens Network, Ericsson, Huawei, Alcatel-Lucent, Nortel and ZTE. Surprisingly, Motorola has not bid for the contract.

As the BSNL opened the bids, communications and IT minister A Raja said BSNL would provide services to all villages having population more than 1,000 persons.

BSNL will also introduce value-added services like mobile TV, mobile broadband, MMS, location-based services etc, he said. The minister informed that value-added services, like mobile banking, mobile advertisement, tele-education and lost mobile tracking system, were also planned to be launched by BSNL during the current year.

Salary Hike- Pay Revision for PSU Staff

Over 210,000 executives in estimated 240 central public sector undertakings are in for a bonanza with a pay revision committee recommending a massive hike in their annual cost-to-company. The hike ranges between 379 per cent at the highest level and 57 per cent at the lowest across companies and levels.

This is assuming the maximum possible payout an executive can get. The award, if accepted, would mean that government servants, particularly defence personnel, would be paid far less in comparison even if one takes into account the recent hike recommended by the Sixth Pay Commission.

The second PSU pay revision committee, headed by former Supreme Court Justice M Jagannadha Rao, submitted its recommendations on Friday to Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Sontosh Mohan Dev.

“We are giving more authority to the companies. They can earn more profit and can share it with their employees,” he said. The report has been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office and the finance ministry. After it is examined, a final proposal will be put up for Cabinet approval. The process could take three-six months.

Shorn of variable components like risk pay and performance-related pay, the effective pay hike works out to between 25 per cent and 40 per cent, according to SM Dewan, director general, Standing Conference of Public Enterprises. “This is a paradigm shift in the government’s thinking on running a business enterprise. It does not put us on a par with private sector companies, but it is a very good beginning,” he added.

The revised salary structure is proposed to come into effect from January 1, 2007.

The proposed pay structure seeks to reduce the disparity between public sector executives and their private sector counterparts and introduce a performance-based compensation culture.

In another far-reaching recommendation, the award calls for complete delinking of public sector and government pay scales. PSU employees are proposed to get much more than government officials.

For instance, the chairman and managing director of a company like ONGC, NTPC or Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd is proposed to be paid Rs 52.20 lakh a year, much more than the annual compensation of Rs 15 lakh (inclusive of all allowances and perks) that a secretary in the central government will get if the Sixth Pay Commission award is implemented in toto.

On a strictly fixed-pay basis, a public sector chairman and director will get Rs 1.25 lakh a month in category A and Rs 65,000 a month in category D companies. In comparison, a government secretary will be paid a fixed Rs 80,000, while the cabinet secretary will be paid Rs 90,000 a month.

The report also recommends that central PSUs be categorised into five (A +, A, B, C, D) based on turnover, manpower and geographical spread.

“We want total delinking of PSUs from the government as we want them to become profitable and strong,” said Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises Chairman Nitish Sengupta, who was a member of the committee.

The pay will be split into two components, basic pay and risk pay, with the latter depending on categorisation, profitability and the executive’s grade. Loss-making firms will not be required to shell out risk pay.

Pay panel’s other recommendations

  • Employee stock options, linked to performance pay

  • Performance-related payout amounting to 40-200 per cent of basic pay

  • Risk pay of Rs 1,100 to Rs 25,000 per month

  • New pay scale of Rs 65,000 - 75,000 of E-10 in A+ companies

  • Sick companies to be allowed pay revision (without risk pay or variable pay) if they make cash profit

  • Central PSUs not making cash profits to be examined by the Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises

  • CMDs and directors of sick central PSUs which have seen a turnaround will retire at 60

  • No upper limit on gratuity

  • Separate fund for post-retirement medical treatment and to meet emergency needs of those who have retired

  • Revision of pay for non-unionised supervisors to be decided by board of directors

  • Retirement benefit of 30 per cent of basic pay, which includes CPF, pension, gratuity and post-retirement medical benefits

Yahoo Domains: A Simple Web Site Solution

Having put up more than a few Web sites myself, one of the easiest ways I've found to get your domains set up and running is to simply go through Yahoo.

Yahoo will register your domains' names for under $10 a year, though as of this writing, Yahoo is having a sale on domains for $2.99 per year. That's a lot cheaper than some registrars I've seen that are still trying to charge $20 or more just for domains.

Once you get your domain registered, you still need to host it somewhere. Again, Yahoo has a simple answer, or several simple answers, in its Geocities service. You can plunk down your domains for free at Yahoo Geocities, but you'll have ads. For a nominal fee ($4.95 per month) you can get 500 MB storage and 25 GB per month transfer -- that's more than enough for most starter sites.

If you host your domains through Yahoo Geocities, you'll get plenty of tools to help you design and manage your site, enough to do just about anything legal you might want to do on the Net.

You'll have access to Yahoo web page templates as well as a point-and-click designer, in addition to the ability to manually play with your domains' HTML.

Yahoo also gives you choices for uploading, using their easy upload manager or the more traditional FTP for large sites. E-mail is part of the package.

A recent addition to the Yahoo Geocities tools is the ability to start and manage a blog on your domains.

All in all, registering and hosting your domains through Yahoo is an easy solution for a home user or small business.

The Things You Have To Know About Benchmark Lendings

The term 'Benchmark lending' sounds rather new and not very familiar, but when you check out a searchengine, you'll see that the keywords are 'interest rates' and 'banking'. High paying keywords,...not to forget!

In the US the benchmark rate is set by the Federal Reserve which is the interest rate the banks pay when they borrow money. As you might know, banks have a certain amount of money on reserve, but when they need more, they have to borrow money over a very short term (that can be very short, like one night!).

That explains why the term is so valuable.

Banks and mortgage companies seek out people who might need a loan. Banking makes it's money on loans, it's just a valuable business to be a part of when there are lots of customers.

Benchmark Lending Group

BLG is a direct mortgage lender, enabling you to quickly secure a new home mortgage or refinance your existing one. They offer a broad range of mortgages that ensures they can provide you with a solution that is specifically tailored to your needs.

They offer:

- 10, 15, 20 and 30 Year Fixed Rate Loans:

The monthly payments and rates for these traditional loans stay the same during the entire loan term. And If principal reduction payments are made, your term will be reduced.

- Fixed for 7 Years (30/7)

The 30/7 loan is great for people who want the security that a fixed-rate loan offers but who are also attracted to the lower interest rates of an adjustable rate loan. The 30/7 loan has a 30-year term and a low fixed rate for seven years. At the end of the fixed-rate term, you have the option to convert to a fixed rate for the remaining 23 years, based on interest rates at the time of conversion.

Choose this type of loan:

• If you intend to keep your home for longer than 10 years

• If long-term stability is more important than payment amount

• If you do not anticipate using your home equity during the term of the loan.

You can read more about it on the BenchmarkLendingsBlog

  • The allotment to eligible applicants will be made through a computerised draw based on random number techniques.

Should one apply for DDA flats under the DDA Housing Scheme'08 considering the ongoing confusion over future of real estate prices in India. Does it appeal as an investment option or should one apply only if he wants to use it as a residence ? How much profit can one earn in case of allotment? Are there any funding schemes for registration amount ? We will seek replies to these questions in the next post.

Mozila FIrefox is more safer than Internet Explorer

I am safer browsing in Mozilla’s Firefox browser than I am in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. I firmly believe this to be the case. Yes, that’s right, Firefox is safer than IE.

In the same vein as my series earlier this year on Windows vs. OS X vs. Linux security, let’s explore how I came to this subjective opinion.

Lower profile target. One of the main reasons I’m more willing to trust my data security to my OS X (Mac) system is that they have a smaller market share than Windows does. This sounds peculiar to many people who aren’t familiar with security, but in the dangerous world that is the Internet, keeping a low profile can be an important aspect of staying secure.

The reason for this, quite simply, is that our attackers, by and large, write their attack code to market share, for all the same reasons that legitimate software developers most often deliver their Windows products before their Mac or Linux ones.

Now, I’m fully aware that Firefox continues to make strides in this area and is constantly gaining market share, so this argument may well eventually fail. I’m confident, though, that by then I’ll have other, lower profile choices available.

For now, finding a balance between unpopular and popular enough to be widely supported on the web sites I frequent is very much a security consideration. Today, that nod goes to Firefox for my needs. It’s very rare that I can’t use Firefox on sites that I care about

Qualitative score: IE gets an F while Firefox gets a B+.

Configurability. This is a tough one to judge. Like many Microsoft features, IE has a quite rich set of security features that can be configured to suit the user’s needs. Firefox, by comparison, is more simplistic in its security configuration choices. There’s a strong argument to be made for each approach.

IE manages its security via “zones”—Internet, Local intranet, Trusted sites, and Restricted sites. Within each zone, the user has a rich set of configuration options where authorizations can be fine-tuned. For example, Internet sites can be set to default to disallowing browser scripting, ActiveX, Flash, and other dangerous content. That’s the good news.

The bad news in all of these rich features is that a) by default, far too much untrustworthy content is allowed (e.g., JavaScript) and that b) the sheer vastness of the features will scare most users out of doing any substantive fine-tuning to protect themselves.

Firefox, on the other hand, is much simpler – but quite possibly too much so. JavaScript, for example, can be enabled or disabled (along with setting a half dozen or so JavaScript capabilities) for all or no sites. It’s nice that turning off dangerous features like this can be quickly turned on and off. It’s so simple that anyone could (and should!) experiment with it. But I want a little bit more flexibility than this.

Qualitative score: IE gets a B+ while Firefox gets a B-.

Security-minded plug-ins. Now here is where Firefox starts to shine, at least for my needs. I’m a huge fan of the popular and free plug-in, NoScript (available from noscript.net). NoScript provides a script whitelisting capability in the entire Mozilla family of browsers, including Firefox.

With NoScript, I can allow individual sites that I have some level of faith in to run script content in my browser, while defaulting to disallowing scripts for all others. I find this approach to be very workable, as I only have to teach NoScript once per site I visit.

To be fair, however, some people find NoScript to be very annoying for the same reasons that I find it liberating. And it’s certainly not perfect. It provides trust per domain, not per IP. That means that, for example, I could allow (say) mac.com to run scripts in my browser, and anything within that entire domain space would be allowed to run – clearly something that I want to avoid.

I understand there are similar (and no doubt more) similar plug-ins available for IE, but I have yet to find something that suits my needs as well as NoScript does. Perhaps someone out there can set me straight on this.

Qualitative score: IE gets a D while Firefox gets an A-.

Open source scrutiny. Ok, this one is a bit shakey, but what the heck. I’m a big fan of open source. I like the fact that the entire Firefox source tree is “out there.” While I don’t place a lot of weight in this as a security feature for most software – indeed, numerous published studies would dismiss it – I just have to believe that Firefox has been studied quite closely by a lot of people. And I’m not just talking about people directly affiliated with Mozilla.

My rationale for this opinion is that Firefox is very high profile, as open source projects go. It’s also a prime target for phishers and other miscreants (notwithstanding my statements above about market share).

The same can’t be said for IE.

Qualitative score: IE gets an F while Firefox gets a C+.

So that’s how I decided Firefox is a better choice for me and my PC users versus IE. How do other browsers fare? I mentioned, after all, that I’m now an OS X desktop user – how about Safari? I also have a few friends whose opinions I trust who use Opera. We’ll dive into those browsers at a later date here.

For now, I’m happy using Firefox with NoScript protecting me from the vast majority of nasty stuff that can happen in Internet applications. Until, that is, something better comes along.
